The preseason polls picked the Michigan State
Spartans #1, Kentucky #2, Duke #3, Kansas #4,
North Carolina #5, Ohio State #6, Louisville #7,
Florida #8,Oklahoma State #9, and Michigan #10. However when the final buzzer sounded it was Connecticut (32-8), #16 preseason, and a
NCAA 7th seed who got to cut down the nets.
In short, the Huskies put together a terrific
late season run to finish #1. The outcome
might have been different for runner-up Kentucky (29-11) but for Willie Cauley-Stein’s late season injury. The Wildcats would
finish #2 in the final poll. Florida’s Gators (36-3) and Wisconsin’s Badgers (30-8), #2 and #3, respectively in the Final Coaches Poll, also made it to the big dance. The remaining top 2014 Coaches Poll Top 10 teams are: #5 Arizona (33-5), #6 Michigan (28-9), #7 Wichita State (35-1), #8 Michigan State (29-9), #9 Louisville (31-6), and #10 Virginia (30-7). The major conferences received 36 of the 68 NCAA bids. ACC teams included North Carolina, NC State, Virginia, Duke, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh. The newly formed American Conference teams were: Cincinnati, Louisville, Connecticut, and Memphis. Big East teams included: Providence, Xavier, Villanova, and Creighton. The Big Ten was represented by Iowa, Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State. and Wisconsin.
The Big 12 teams are Kansas, Iowa State,
Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, Oklahoma State,
and Kansas State. Mid-Major Dayton (26-11),
reached the Elite 8, San Diego State (31-5)
made it to the Sweet 16. Minnesota (25-13)
squeaked by SMU (27-10) to win the NIT.
Murray State (23-11) won the CIT title beating
Yale (19-14). Siena (20-18) bested Fresno State in a 3-game series to win the CBI Tournament.
In total, 148 mens schools received post
season tournament bids. The Connecticut women (40-0) won their 9th NCAA Women's Championship by routing Notre Dame (37-1). Stanford (33-4) and Maryland (28-7) were the other Final Four teams. The women’s Elite 8 teams are: Louisville (33-5), Baylor (32-5), North Carolina (27-10) and Texas A&M 27-9).
