It was another terrific season of college

basketball with North Carolina (33-7) winning

the NCAA Championship defeating a stubborn

mid-major Gonzaga, 71-65. Preseason polls

had Duke #1, Kansas #2, Villanova #3,

Kentucky #4, Oregon #5, North Carolina #6,

Virginia #7, Xavier #8, Michigan State #9,

and Wisconsin #10. In final Coaches Poll

North Carolina finished #1, Gonzaga #2

(37-2),Oregon #3 (33-6), Kansas #4 (31-5), Kentucky #5 (32-6), South Carolina #6 (26-11),

Arizona #7 (32-5), Villanova #8 (32-4),

UCLA #9 (31-5), and Florida #10 (27-9).

Major conferences received 40 of the 68

NCAA bids. American Conference teams

were: Cincinnati and SMU. ACC teams

include: Duke, Florida State, Louisville,

Miami (FL), North Carolina, Notre Dame,

Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Big Ten teams are: Maryland, Michigan,

Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern,

Purdue, and Wisconsin. The Big 12 teams are:

Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma State,

and West Virginia. The Big East teams included

Butler, Creighton, Marquette, Providence,

Seton Hall, Villanova, and Xavier. The PAC-12

teams are: Arizona, Oregon, UCLA, and USC.

The SEC teams were: Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vanderbilt. Three mid-majors reached the round of 32: Middle Tennessee (31-5), Wichita State (31-5), and Saint Mary's (29-5). In the NIT Championship TCU (24-15) thumped

Georgia Tech (21-15), 88-56. Saint Peter's (23-13) won the CIT title edging by Texas A&M-CC (24-12), 62-61. Wyoming (23-15)

won the CBI title 2 games to 1 over Coastal Carolina (20-19). A total of 142 men’s schools received a post season tournament bid.

South Carolina’s women, (33-4) beat

Mississippi State (34-5), 67-55, to win the Women’s Championship. The other Final Four teams are Connecticut, (36-1) and Stanford, (32-6). The other women’s Elite 8 teams were: Notre Dame, (33-4), Baylor, (33-4), Florida State, (28-7),and Oregon State, (31-5).
