'19 Season Recap

Virginia wins the NCAA DI Championship

defeating Texas Tech, 85-77, in overtime. Preseason polls had Kansas #1, Kentucky #2,

Duke #3, Gonzaga #4, Virginia #5, Tennessee #6, North Carolina #7, Villanova #8, Nevada #9, and Michigan State #10. Virginia is #1 (35-3) in the final Coaches Poll, Texas Tech #2 (31-7),

Michigan State #3 (32-87), Duke #4 (32-6), Auburn #5 (30-10), Gonzaga #6 (33-4),

Kentucky #7 (30-7), Purdue #8 (26-10), North Carolina #9 (29-7), and Tennessee #10 (31-6).

Major conferences received 39 of the 68 NCAA bids. American Conference teams were: Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, and Temple. ACC teams include: Duke, Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina, Syracuse, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Big Ten teams are: Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State, Purdue. and Wisconsin The Big 12 teams are: Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and Texas Tech, and West Virginia. Big East teams were: Marquette, Seton Hall,

St. John’s and Villanova. PAC-12 teams are:

Arizona State, Oregon, and Washington. The

SEC teams were: Auburn, Florida, Kentucky,

LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Tennessee. Seven mid-majors reached the round of 32 or better: Buffalo (32-4), Central Florida (24-9),

Gonzaga (33-4), Liberty (29-7), Murray State (28-5), UC Irvine (31-6) and Wofford (30-5). In the NIT Championship Texas (21-16) bested Lipscomb (29-8), 81-66. Marshall (23-14)

won the CIT title thumping Green Bay (21-17), 90-70. South Florida (24-14) won the

CBI title 2 games to 1 over DePAul (19-17).

In total 136 men’s schools received a post

season tournament bid. Baylor’s women

(37-1) edged Notre Dame (35-4), 82-81, to

win the Women’s Championship. The other

Final Four teams were Connecticut (35-3) and Oregon (33-5). The women’s Elite 8 teams were: Iowa (29-7), Louisville (32-4), Mississippi

State (33-3), and Stanford (31-5).
